Charger continually connected?

I have a query about the behaviour of the S4 when the charger is left permanently connected.
(My company have used S4's for as long as I can remember and I have now been asked to check out a box of "duffs" to see what's what).
My colleague claims that his S4 appeared to be able to automatically switch the charging circuit off and on at will, but I can't get it to do this and all the info I've collected suggests that it can't. Please can someone clarify?
P.S does the 106D thyristor carry the charge current to the battery? If so, this might explain why the unit shuts down when charging is complete - I guess this would be the only way to switch the
thyristor off.
