Hi,
New to all this can someone fill me in on what is actually needed:
1) Is there a guide to programming to answer my questions, if not

2) Do I need eeprom and pic hexes specific to the car I want to change, and if so where do I get them from..

3) Do I use a new chip or just program my old one?.

Hi,

A guide to programming is available in the S4 manual and in the S4 support files in the product support area of this Website. But to help with questions 2 and 3 :

2) You will need to use specific hex files that will contain the code which will be specific to the car you wish to program. I do not know where you can get these from, probably best to ask the car manufacturer.

3) This depends on the type of chip you have, but generally most modern chips can be erased and then programmed again.

I want to be able to program an Eprom in order to make myself a electronic board that will allow me to set some relay on and off at a particular time. What i should start with first ? It will be use for home automation. Thanks!

Hi Daniel,
Before you even program an EPROM you'll need a computer (or some kind of microprocessor with I/O's) to run the program, which you'll have written in some computer language and compiled. You can have almost ready systems at:

New to programming. I have purchased an S4 on recommendation of a long time user, but my requirements are quite specific.
I need to copy the following eproms in small quantities, say 4 or 5 sets a month, preferably in the field, at the customers site.

1 eprom used is manufacturers code ST M27C801-120F1, the product uses 2 of these items, each with a different set of instructions.
Following the instruction manual to read the eprom produces... SILICOM SIGNATURE 2042
NO MATCH FOUND.

The other eprom is manufacturers code ST M27C1001, reads on the S4 as SGS-THOMPSON 27C1001, followed by the other data. I need to copy 2 of this eprom for each product.

My question is simple... how do I do this? The instruction booklet leaves me confused.

Ben,

Well both devices are supported by the S4 using the library [S4 8 bit (EPROM) lib. V3.00] and probably earlier versions.

If the auto ID does not find the device then you will have to manually select the part but hitting PROM and using the cursor keys to navigate through the manufacturer and devices.

The 27C1001 being a 1Mbit device you could easily store both of your files in the S4 RAM if you have the 4Mbit/512K unit. This would allow you to burn two chips without loading the file into the S4 each time.

The 27C801 on the other hand is an 8Mbit device. Straight off this is bigger than the S4 RAM the file must be split in half 2x4Mbit and burned onto the chip in stages. This would be the case for each file assuming a size equal to the device.

It sounds like this chip you are looking for is from a specific product, I would advise that you contact the manufacturer of the product and ask for their recommended solution, or maybe they have a users forum where you can ask for help.
